The station is only kept open for a small amount of local services that stop at Manors and as for being only 2 mins away from Newcastle its a ten minute walk from Newcastle Central back to the Manors area it is mainly used by the office workers in that area. and dont be mislead by the size of the station take a look at the photo again the whole of that Virgin train is on the platform and there is room for at least another coach lenght left in front of the set so its not that small a station before the Tyne & Wear Metro opened in 1980, Manors was a very big and a very busy station it had at least nine working platforms and a bay goods platform.

Why would Virgin Trains stop here?

The platform would probably be too small, depending on the size of the train. It's pointless having the station when Newcastle is 2 minutes away!
