During the mid-late 1980's there were a number of occasions when a DMMU substituted for a DEMU on the Hasting-Ashford line. The unit was one of the Tonbridge-Reading ones. The unit would work down ECS from Tonbridge to Hastings (Tonbridge crews were trained on them), and would usually work starting with the 0555? Hastings to Ashford. It would do two trips before going into Chart Leacon for fuel around 1000? By this time the remaining DEMU's had been fuelled, and the DMMU ran ECS from Chart Leacon to Tonbridge before working to Reading in the afternoon. Also on several occasions a DMMU was used between Ashford and Rye during weekend engineering works.
During the bad winter in 1986/7 a DMMU did a couple of evening trips between Tonbridge and Hastings.
